Changelog

A summary of the main releases of the ChartPad Parliament Chart, with new features and bug fixes for each version. The most recent release is listed first.

Rollout timing

After a version is released, it takes roughly 2 weeks to roll out across the Power BI online service and the Desktop applications. If you don't see the latest changes yet, allow some time for the update to reach your environment.

New features​

  • Change the shape of the arch. A new Arc slider on the Layout card takes the chart from a narrow 90° wedge, through the classic 180° hemicycle, to a closed 360° ring. Before this release it was always a semicircle. Rows, seat size and spacing all adjust to whatever you choose. See Arc.
  • Hover a party to read it. Moving the pointer over any part of a party's wedge lights up that party, fades the others, and shows its seat count in the middle of the arch — in the party's own colour, with the party name underneath. Hovering a legend entry does the same. Hovering never filters the report, so you can read the chart without disturbing the page. See Hovering a party.
  • Parties are much easier to click. You no longer have to hit a seat exactly: clicking anywhere inside a party's wedge selects it. On a 650-seat chart, where each dot is a few pixels across, this is the difference between a chart you can use and one you can only look at. Clicking the total in the centre, or empty space, clears the selection.

Improvements​

  • Clearer legend position names. The eight legend positions now read as Top, Top center, Bottom, Bottom center and so on. Reports built with an earlier version keep the position they were set to. See Position.

Bug fixes​

  • No more flash of the "add data" screen when a report opens. The onboarding page briefly appeared over a chart that was about to render.

New features​

  • License the visual outside AppSource. You can now buy a license key from ChartPad and paste it into a new License card in the Format pane. It licenses the visual in the environments AppSource licensing doesn't reach — Power BI Report Server, Power BI Embedded, Publish to web, SharePoint and sovereign clouds — and the key travels with the report, so there is nothing for your viewers to install. The key is checked inside the visual, so nothing about your report or your data leaves Power BI, and a status line under the box tells you who the license is for and when it runs out. New features​

  • Use a report page as a tooltip. Point the visual's tooltip at a page of your own to show measures, mini-charts or a member's photo when a seat is hovered. This is the way to get measures into a tooltip, since the Tooltips field well itself takes columns only. See Report-page tooltips.

Bug fixes​

  • Charts built from text Seat IDs no longer come up blank. Seat IDs such as S-001 or A14 stopped drawing in the previous release. They work again — and if a text column does end up in the Seat Count well by mistake, the visual now tells you so on the canvas, and tells you to switch that field to a Count aggregation, instead of leaving you with an empty box and nothing to go on.   • Too many seats now gives you a message instead of a half-drawn chart. A measure asking for more than 10,000 seats used to draw some parties and quietly leave others out, so the chart looked complete when it wasn't. It now explains the limit, so you can filter or rescale. See The seat limit.

The release that let the visual work straight from ordinary summary data.

New features​

  • Build a chart from party totals. The visual used to need one row per seat in your model. You can now bind Party and a Seat Count measure instead, and each party gets as many seats as its value — no per-seat table to build, and nothing to expand in Power Query. One row per seat still works exactly as before, and still gives every seat its own tooltip. See Shaping your data.
  • Seat counts in the legend. A new Seat counts toggle adds each party's total to its legend entry — Labour (411) — so the legend doubles as a results table. Numbers follow the viewer's regional settings, and a long party name is shortened before the number is, so the count is always readable in full. See Seat counts in the legend.
  • A more helpful start screen. The page shown before you bind any fields now separates Required from Optional fields in two tabs, explains what each field is for, and has a Documentation button that opens this site.

New features​

  • Cross-highlighting down to individual seats. Select a region, a date or a category in another visual on the page and each party's wedge now splits — the seats covered by that selection stay bright, the rest fade — so you can see what proportion of every party the selection accounts for. It works whether your chart is built from party totals or from one row per seat. See Being filtered by other visuals.

Improvements​

  • Exports and subscriptions wait for the chart to finish drawing (1.0.0.4), so a PDF, a PowerPoint slide or a subscription email never catches it half-rendered.
  • The legend copes better with tight spaces (1.0.0.4) — improved sizing, and better shortening of long party names.
  • The license notice is clickable (1.0.0.3), taking you straight to the Marketplace listing.

Bug fixes​

  • Cross-highlighting fixes (1.0.0.5, 1.0.0.6) — several cases where selecting something in another visual left the wrong seats faded.

The first public version of the Parliament Chart.

Included at launch​

  • Semicircular seating layout — one dot per seat, arranged in an arch, with rows, seat size and spacing worked out for you from the number of seats.
  • Party grouping — one contiguous wedge, one legend entry and one colour picker per party.
  • Sort Order — a numeric field placing parties around the arch left to right, with the legend following the same order. See Seat and party ordering.
  • Custom Color — party colours taken straight from a hex-code column in your model, so official colours don't have to be re-picked in every report. See Party colours.
  • Legend in eight positions, with an optional title, its own colour and text size.
  • Seat outline toggle, for pale palettes and dense charts.
  • Total seats label in the centre of the arch, switching to the selected party's count in that party's colour.
  • Tooltips — the party, plus any fields you bind, each shown in its own format.
  • Cross-filtering by clicking a party or a legend entry, with ctrl+click to select several and selection shared across visuals.
  • Right-click menu on seats and on empty space.
  • Full high-contrast support — the chart, the legend and the start screen all follow the Windows system palette.
  • A start screen listing the fields to bind.
  • 36 interface languages, following the viewer's Power BI language.
